The Society of Genealogists
The Society of Genealogists (SoG) is a significant support for family history research, primarily through its extensive library and collections. Their library boasts over 21,700 accessible items, including quick guides, instructional materials, record guides, and general/local history. The SoG also welcomes donations to preserve research. They even highlight specific collections, such as professions starting with A and B in April 2025.
For those unable to visit, the SoG offers remote access to its collections. Members can use the online catalogue and search digital resources. Their Genealogy Search/Copy Service allows members to request searches of library and archive items for a fee. Additionally, a Virtual Reading Room service is planned for 2025.
The SoG provides genealogical expertise via their staff, who assist with research queries and resource identification both within their collections and externally. They also participate in a Digital Journal Exchange and publish their own quarterly, the Genealogists' Magazine. Furthermore, the SoG actively seeks feedback through reviews and surveys to enhance their services, ensuring they remain a valuable resource for all family historians.
